Edward B. Aull, MD Behavioral Pediatrician Specialist Presentation: “Is it Autism or ADHD?”
Dr. Aull did his undergraduate training at Indiana University and continued in medical school at IUMC. He performed his residency at Riley Hospital under the tutelage of renowned behavioral pediatrician, Morris Green, MD. Dr. Aull has presented at national CHADD, ADDA, Autism, and MAAP conferences with the focus on Asperger’s Syndrome, its diagnosis and treatment related to ADHD. In addition, he has had two articles published in Attention Magazine on “Differentiating ADHD from Asperger’s Syndrome” and “Side Effects of ADHD Medications.” He is a mentor to other physicians on the merits of medications manufactured by pharmaceutical companies, Lilly, Novartis, Shire, and McNeil. In addition, he has participated in phase III drug trials on Concerta and Adderall XR. When asked about awards earned, Dr. Aull (a Dr. Einstein look-alike with an easy-going persona) acknowledged having received a “teaching award” from St.Vincent’s Hospital residents, but refrained from elaborating on father-son bowling and road-rally trophies!
Dr. Aull is a behavioral pediatrician specialist who has treated several thousand patients with Autism Spectrum Disorders. He has been treating those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder since 1974 and Autism/Asperger's since the mid eighties. In 1996, he gave up general pediatrics and limited his practice to the medication treatment of those affected by ADHD and ASD. Symptoms included in his area of expertise are:
- ADHD
- Anxiety disorders such as social shyness, obsessive-compulsive behavior, fear of uncertainty, adamant behavior
- Outbursts, aggression
- Social interest and reading social cues.
- While there is often a cross-over of more than one diagnosis and/or symptoms, Dr. Aull will focus on differentiating between ADHD and the Autism Spectrum Disorders.
While Dr. Aull recognizes the need for medications as well as behavior therapy, he is most comfortable with taking a cautious approach where such medications are introduced slowly which allows for patients to adjust to dose and time on medication. Patients with an autism spectrum disorder are often very sensitive to even small changes in medications. Dr. Aull provides the needed expertise as he has treated several thousand patients with an autism related disorder.
His practice is a “fee for service” practice; yet while he is not a part of insurance plans or Medicaid, this does not mean that insurance will not pay some or all of the fees. Insurance will usually not reimburse for the time required to correctly adjust medications in patients who can be very sensitive to medications/dose changes and have symptoms that may overlap two or three categories of disorders. Dr.Aull usually finds it takes about a year to get the medication adjustments correct.
