It would seem self evident that teachers cannot perform their magic with children and children cannot learn to their best potential without a safe, calm and warm climate. Michael Dorn believes that every school can be a safe, warm and supportive environment for children to grow and flourish. Widely considered one of the world's best known, highly respected and most credentialed school safety experts, Michael Dorn serves as the Executive Director for Safe Havens International Inc., the world’s foremost non-profit school safety center. Safe Havens analysts have worked in more than twenty countries and with more than 2,000 public and private school systems and government agencies to make school a safer place. Michael began his career in law enforcement at the age of 18 as a Police Officer with the Mercer University Police Department. He was promoted to Police Corporal at the age of 19, Police Sergeant at the age of 21, and Police Lieutenant at the age of 25. In 1989, he was appointed Chief of School Police at the age of 27. His department has been widely featured as a model school law enforcement unit by many organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice. Michael was appointed as the lead technical expert for the nation’s largest state government school safety center – the School Safety Project of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency – Office of the Governor in August, 1999. In April 2003, he was selected as the Lead Program Manager for the Emergency Response and Terrorism Preparedness Division in the Georgia Emergency Management Agency – Office of Homeland Security. Michael left the Office of Homeland Security when he was selected as the Senior Analyst for Public Safety and Emergency Management for Jane’s after Jane’s conducted an international search for the world’s top school safety expert. He serves as the lead school safety expert for Jane’s offices in nine countries. He is a prolific writer having authored and co-authored 20 books on school safety. His latest book, Innocent Targets – When Terrorism Comes to School is already in use by numerous state and federal agencies in all 50 states and U.S. Territories. Dorn has been featured in 12 training videos that are in use in more than 25 countries. The FBI, U.S. Secret Service, FEMA, TSA, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Israel Police, British intelligence and security services are among the 50,000 agencies and organizations that have utilized his videos and DVD’s for training. Michael holds an MA Degree in Service Administration and a BA degree in History and Political Science from Mercer University. He is also a graduate of the 181st session of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy at Quantico, Virginia. Having completed more than 3,000 hours of public safety and emergency management training, he holds Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, Management, Executive, and Police Instructor certifications through the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council. Dorn received a fellowship to participate in the Sixth Annual Delegation of Law Enforcement Executives to the State of Israel in June of 1998. Through this Georgia State University Program, he received two weeks of intensive anti-terrorism orientation and training by the Israel National Police, Israel Defense Forces, and the Mossad.
A powerful and popular keynote presenter at major conferences, Dorn has also provided consultation and technical assistance to more than 2,000 school systems, police departments, government agencies, and private organizations world wide. Dorn has been featured in hundreds of news segments including Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight, Forbes, Time, Tokyo Broadcasting and in articles published by the New York Times and Associated Press as well as in many overseas newspapers. Michael has served on numerous government focus groups and think tanks and as a technical advisor to many federal projects including the United States Department of Education’s Practical Information on Crisis Planning Guide expert working group, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms School Bomb Threat Response Interactive Training Tool development team and a focus group created by former United States Attorney General Janet Reno to research ways to reduce firearm violence in our country. Dorn has received many awards and was honored by a resolution passed by the Georgia State Senate in 1999 for his efforts to reduce violence in schools. He was also asked to review the weapons screening program at the 2001 Olympic Games and led the development team for the emergency operations planning template for use by more than 4,000 Boys and Girls Clubs worldwide.
